  1. NIC Mail Services                                          Feb  1992

  3.    This is an automated service provided by the DDN Network Information
  4. Center.  It allows access to NIC documents and information via ordinary
  5. electronic mail.  This is especially useful for people who do not have
  6. access to the NIC via a direct Internet link, such as BITNET, CSNET
  7. and UUCP sites.
  8.  
  9.    To use the mail service, send a mail message to SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL.
  10. In the SUBJECT field, request the type of service you wish followed by
  11. any needed arguments.  The message body is normally ignored; however, if the
  12. SUBJECT field is empty, the first line of the message body will be used
  13. as the request.  Large files will be broken into smaller separate messages.
  14. However, a few files are too large to be sent through the mail system.
  15. Requests are processed automatically once a day.

  17. The following services are currently available:

  19. HELP            This message; a list of current services.
  20. HOST xxx        Returns information about host xxx.  WHOIS xxx can
  21.                 also be used to get more details about a host.
  22. IEN nnn         nnn is the IEN number or the word INDEX.
  23. IETF xxx        xxx is a file name
  24. INDEX           Returns the master list of available index files.
  25. INTERNET-DRAFTS xxx     xxx is a file name
  26. NETINFO xxx     xxx is a file name or the word INDEX.
  27. RFC nnn         nnn is the RFC number or the word INDEX.
  28. RFC nnn.PS      to retrieve an available Postscript RFC. Check RFC INDEX for
  29.                 form of RFC.
  30. FYI nnn         nnn is the FYI number or the word INDEX.
  31. FYI nnn.PS      to retrieve postscript versions of FYI files.
  32. SEND xxx        xxx is a fully specified file name.
  33. WHOIS xxx       Returns information about xxx from the WHOIS service.
  34.                 Use "WHOIS HELP" for information on how to use WHOIS.
